Meet the Singers
Julia Taylor, soprano
Julia Taylor, Soprano, has recently made her company debut as Curley’s Wife in Austin Opera’s Of Mice and Men and performed Ginastera’s String Quartet No.3 with the Miro Quartet. She has been recognized as “Best Singer” by the Austin Critics’ Table Award for the roles of Mimì in La Femme Bohème and Beatrice in Jake Heggie’s Three Decembers. Upcoming engagements include the role of Frasquita in Austin Opera’s Carmen and soloist with Austin Symphony Orchestra in Bruckner’s Te deum. Past engagements include a solo recital with the Puccini Foundation, Königin der Nacht in Die Zauberflöte with the Butler Opera Center and soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah with Austin Symphony Orchestra and Chorus Austin.
Ellie Jarrett Shattles, mezzo-soprano
Ellie Jarrett Shattles, Mezzo-Soprano, is currently finishing her D.M.A. in Opera Performance from The University of Texas, where she has had the opportunity to perform Komponist from Ariadne, Baker’s Wife from Into the Woods, Cherubino from Figaro, Maddie from Three Decembers, Mme. de Croissy from Dialogues of the Carmelites, Zita from Gianni Schicchi, and most recently, Third Lady from The Magic Flute. During UT’s 2017-2018 season, Ellie will be performing Dorabella from Così fan tutte, Lucretia from Rape of Lucretia and Mistress Quickly fromFalstaff. Ms. Shattles has also performed with several opera programs including Merola (Dorabella), Aspen (Rosina) and Santa Fe (2-year Apprentice). Ellie enjoys teaching a variety of private voice students in the Austin area.
Soonchan Kwon, Tenor
Soonchan Kwon, Tenor, is native Korean, and graduated from Mokwon University’s school of music. He won the CBS National Voice Competition, Russia ARFA competition, as well as 2nd prize in the Peters Edition competition and 3rd prize in Bel Canto International. He has recently earned a D.M.A. with an Opera/Voice emphasis from the Butler School of Music. With the Butler Opera Center, he has performed over fifteen roles. He has participated in 2015 Merola Opera Program at San Francisco Opera and has performed the role as Ernesto in Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti with Merola. He also has made his debut as Messenger in Aida with Austin Lyric Opera.
Benjamin Cox, Baritone
Benjamin Cox, Baritone, enjoys a career both on and off the stage. His recent operatic role credits include, Marcello in Puccini’s La bohème, George in scenes from Carlisle Floyd’s Of Mice and Men (Austin Opera), Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte (Spotlight on Opera), Tom/John in Henry Mollicone's The Face on the Barroom Floor (Opera in the Rock), Wagner, in Gounod's Faust (Austin Opera), Frank in Die Fledermaus (Butler Opera Center), and John Sorel in Menotti's The Consul (Butler Opera Center). In addition to his work as a soloist he also serves as the associate director of music for St. Albert the Great Catholic Church in Austin. Mr. Cox is currently pursuing a D.M.A. in Voice Pedagogy at The University of Texas.
